## The reviews behind the comparison

### Clerk

Consider for: Customizable React sign-in flows

Integration: React components; backend APIs

Reviewed: 2023-08-31

Review: https://console.dev/tools/clerk#review_ad505be9a9322b3e4c11e011ca2e9b286f0e327f197276ddb11fb29eef816366

#### What we liked

Clerk — Console review, Aug 31, 2023. Based around React components which can be customized with CSS variables, inline CSS or Tailwind. Build custom flows with social signin, SSO, organizations, and MFA. Everything is available as an API for integration into backend code (there’s also a Go SDK). Has helpers for e2e testing using Cypress.

#### Tradeoffs at review

Clerk — Console review, Aug 31, 2023. Backend SDKs are only available for Go, Ruby, and JS - you’ll need to use the API for everything else.

### FusionAuth

Consider for: Control over where authentication runs

Integration: Self-hosted or cloud; SDKs and REST APIs

Reviewed: 2023-05-25

Review: https://console.dev/tools/fusionauth#review_50f04d5aa805ef8d373e4bf3255dec4ce0c001f5b0be125b4bcc3b176891cf49

#### What we liked

FusionAuth — Console review, May 25, 2023. Provides user signup, login, and role-based authorization flows. Supports social logins, SSO, SAML, multi-tenancy & passwordless login methods. SDKs for most languages & tech stacks, with REST APIs for everything else. Can integrate with API gateways like Kong and AWS API Gateway. Can be self-hosted or cloud hosted.

#### Tradeoffs at review

FusionAuth — Console review, May 25, 2023. WebAuthn and passkeys are only available in more expensive plans. Default UI looks a bit dated, so you will want to customize it.

### Logto

Consider for: Open-source authentication with framework integrations

Integration: Self-hosted or cloud; framework SDKs

Reviewed: 2023-08-17

Review: https://console.dev/tools/logto#review_45d5cd566f4fc73f38c57d549527e011f56e9ee23570b82d4466433903f2f2c6

#### What we liked

Logto — Console review, Aug 17, 2023. Easily set up various auth methods - social login, passwordless, SAML, SMS. Integrations into frameworks like Next.js (including app router), React, Go, Python, iOS. Supports RBAC. Includes audit logs and webhooks for events. Dark mode. Can be cloud hosted, but is also open source so you can run it yourself.

#### Tradeoffs at review

Logto — Console review, Aug 17, 2023. Customization is through CSS injected into their UI - would be good to see these as more flexible React components.

### Stytch

Consider for: Consumer and B2B organization-based authentication

Integration: APIs; organization-specific users and configuration

Reviewed: 2024-05-02

Review: https://console.dev/tools/stytch#review_7f817fcb837a39394f72c41fa2a560992d4a3f0e3ce15b087976485c2f4634b9

#### What we liked

Stytch — Console review, May 2, 2024. Consumer & B2B SaaS auth APIs, with separation of top-level org as a unit of multi-tenancy. This allows different configs & users per org within the same top-level project. Supports social auth, magic links, passkeys, SSO, SCIM. Also includes RBAC permissions. Customizable JWT claims. Management UI has dark mode.

#### Tradeoffs at review

Stytch — Console review, May 2, 2024. Device fingerprinting features aren’t available self-service. Missing some popular language SDKs e.g. PHP, Rust, .NET.

### WorkOS

Consider for: Enterprise SSO and directory integration

Integration: AuthKit UI; frontend and backend SDKs

Reviewed: 2024-08-29

Reviewed on Oct 15, 2026 and Aug 29, 2024. [Read both reviews](https://console.dev/tools/workos).

#### What we liked

WorkOS — Console review, Aug 29, 2024. User management (free up to 1 million users) backend with support for social auth, magic auth, multi-factor, SSO (SAML or OIDC with directory sync). Users can belong to organizations for multi-account support. AuthKit framework provides themeable UI components for everything. Supports invite-only signup. SDKs for frontend & backend.

#### Tradeoffs at review

WorkOS — Console review, Aug 29, 2024. No support for passkeys or FIDO security keys. Fine grained authorization functionality still in early access.

## Decide for your first release

Start with a provider that fits your stack and the login flow you need today. Before committing, check how the choice will change as you add customers.

### Who signs in first?

Individual users or customer teams? If you sell to businesses, decide whether organizations and enterprise SSO are needed at launch or later.

### What can you ship quickly?

Check the SDK for your actual stack and try the signup flow. Decide whether ready-made UI is enough and whether you want to operate a self-hosted service.

### What changes as you grow?

Price your expected user count and enterprise connections, check which features require a paid plan, and confirm how you could export your users.
