What we like

Dev environment with all dependencies and tools pre-defined in code. Setup steps and configs can be automated with scripts. CLI integration with direnv for auto setup. VS Code extension to manage workflows and orchestrate devcontainers. Uses Nix behind the scenes, but you can ignore that. Can also be used as a package manager across multiple projects.

Tradeoffs

Initial bootstrapping can take some time as dependencies are downloaded - public & private cache options are available.
