What we like

Reads in environment variable files. Runs as a CLI rather than a library so it works with any language. Supports encrypted key values so the environment variable file can be committed to Git. CLI also supports other commands e.g. get and set. Open source and works across platforms.

Tradeoffs

Environment variables are great for configs, but not the right place for secrets.
